Canine Commendations
On World Animal Day (Sunday 4 October 2009) we celebrated the special bond between dogs and people by recognising people for the 2009 Canine Commendations.
Two types of commendations are awarded annually by the Dogs' Homes of Tasmania to mark World Animal Day and to celebrate the special bond between people and dogs; 'Commendations for Service to Canines' and 'Canine Commendations', the later awarded to dogs themselves.
Commendations for Service to Canines are awarded to individuals or organisations who show a special commitment to caring for dogs.
For 2009 a Commendation for Service to Canines has been awarded to Rita Lynd.
Rita established the High Shangrila Dog Training School on the north west coast in 1996.
Since then, Rita has assisted many hundreds of dog owners with training and care of their dog. A champion of dogs in need,
Rita has supported the Burnie and Devonport Dogs’ Homes tirelessly for many years, providing her time and expertise to
assist with the re-homing of individual dogs, staff training, supporting new dog owners and promoting responsible dog ownership in the community.
So many people have formed a close and lasting bond with their dogs thanks to Rita’s guidance and training. Rita is a true advocate for dogs and helps owners overcome the challenges that sometimes arise.
In 2008, one of two Commendations for Service to Canines went to Jonathon who dived off Victoria Dock in Hobart to rescue a puppy who was struggling to stay afloat in the deep water. A successful rescue resulted in a much relieved puppy, owner, rescuer and on-lookers!
Canine Commendations are awarded to dogs who have demonstrated special acts of service or heroism.
In 2008, dog Skye received a Canine Commendation for her outstanding loyalty in rendering assistance to her injured master. When Skye's owner fell, the dog stayed close by until he heard a neighbour return home. Skye then ran over to the neighbour and barked persistently and ran back towards his owner. He continued to repeat this action until the neighbour realised there was something wrong and followed Skye to the accident scene. An ambulance was called and Skye remained at her owner's side, only parting when the ambulance took his owner off to hospital. Once recovered, Skye's owner was happily reunited with his loyal and much-loved dog.
