Dogs' Homes of Tasmania ~ Happy Endings

Lena’s Story

A Basenji cross adopted in June 2007, Lena loves life. She is very intelligent and loves being the focus of attention. She has settled in well, loves playing with her toys and riding in the car.

Lena barked a lot initially but has stopped that now and by using distraction and reward training techniques, Lena is learning not to leap on everyone quite so enthusiastically!  Lena’s new person (Elizabeth) says she found everyone at the Dogs’ Home friendly, caring and helpful.

Thanks Elizabeth. We think Lena is one lucky dog to have ‘found’ you.

Ollie’s Story

Ollie the Shih-tzu cross was known as Saxon until his adoption in May 2007.  With a lot of love and patience, Ollie has settled in and is bringing much joy to the lives of his new people. It took quite a bit of rehabilitation because at first Ollie was very anxious and nervous and suffered from severe separation anxiety when left alone. He would cry and scratch and it was difficult for anyone to even leave the room! But Ollie is now a happy dog in his new home.

He is perfectly toilet trained and learnt to use the doggy-door immediately. He is a very friendly and obedient who loves going to the dog beach!

Despite his tough transition period and quite major issues, Ollie’s new people wouldn’t change him for the world – “He is our baby!”

“We called Mererid on the Dogs’ Home Help Line and she was very helpful.”

“We would love a small, older, quiet companion for Ollie, so will definitely be considering another Dogs’ Home dog.”

A BIG thank you for sticking with this little guy and seeing him through the difficult times. Those first few weeks sure can be hard going with any new dog but Ollie had some serious demons to conquer. Your patience and love has worked wonders with little Ollie and no doubt he will love you forever in return!

Pepper’s story

Pepper the puppy is growing fast. Just 5 months old when adopted, Pepper is turning out to be bigger than anticipated! She is very settled and quiet, hardly barks and has not yet attempted to dig in the veggie garden! Pepper’s new person is finding puppy hood challenging but mostly rewarding.

It’s quite amazing how much mischief pups can get up to, but Pepper sounds like a real treasure. We wish you and your new dog a happy lifelong relationship together.

Lizzie’s story

Lizzie the Whippet cross bonded very quickly her new people (clever girl).  She has learnt the boundaries of her property, doesn’t bark at night and has vitality-a-plenty! Lizzie was totally un-housetrained for the first three weeks but has since improved. Lizzie is attending obedience classes now. Lizzie’s new people were impressed by the caring attitudes of the staff and volunteer dog walkers.... “many thanks to all”.

Our thanks go to you for giving this lovely dog a second chance and a loving home.

Darcy’s story

Darcy, a 7 year old sheltie/sheep dog loves his daily walk especially when a tennis ball is on hand. Darcy is a ‘ball of energy’ himself but has quickly become accustomed to household routines and is quiet in the house. Like most dogs, he has no road sense so is kept on a lead when near footpaths or roads. Darcy’s new person is Barry who says.....”He is really a most delightful companion, quite easy to manage and surprisingly obedient most of the time”.

On his first night in his new house, Darcy hadn’t had time to learn the rules and did his ‘business’ in the house three times! Barry (who obviously knows a lot about dogs) didn’t scold him about this. Instead he commends and rewards Darcy for his good habits (when he goes in the right place!) and now Darcy has learned that outside is the place for ‘business’.

Darcy is much loved, despite no good as a watch dog!

Barry – we like the sound of you!  What a patient and kind person you are. No wonder Darcy loves you so much…….

Mr Beau- Jangle’s Story

This young Rotty cross was adopted from the Devonport Dogs’ Home in December 2006. What a success story…read on….

“He has settled in beautifully. All in all, I’m one happy hound myself” says Richard. “I’m sure he is also very happy to have adopted me. We are a good team and are good for each other, couldn’t be happier.

My sincere thank you for finding this beautiful animal, someone’s loss and my enormous gain. REAL PEOPLE THAT LOVE ANIMALS NEED TO TRY AND CONVERT THOSE THAT DON’T” …..never a truer word spoken,  nicely put.

And as for the Devonport staff ….courteous, caring, helpful and a pleasure to be associated with (it goes without saying but we’re so glad you did!)  Thanks Richard, Mr Beau Jangles is a very lucky boy to have found you.

Trevor’s Story

Trevor was named Toby prior to his adoption in June 2007. This lovable Heeler cross has settled in better than his new people had expected. He is the friendliest dog around people and other animals, is training really quite easily and everyone who meets him comments on his nice nature. He is a lovely, calm, quiet dogs who loves a walk and a run (and gets them!)

Trevor’s new people went to the Dogs’ Home with an open mind and Trevor ‘found’ them. He is different to their previous type of dog but actually more suited to their lifestyle.

What is their advice to you? ……..if you’re looking to adopt a dog, check out the Dogs’ Home but we warned – you probably wont leave there empty-handed!

Yes, there are always a lot of worthy and unique dogs to choose from at the Dogs’ Homes. A big thank you for giving dear Trevor such a happy and loving home to call his own.
